Some of you know what your skin type is but a lot of individuals really
don't know. Some of you may be washing your face with too harsh of a
product for your skin type. If you have oily skin and wash it with a
harsh soap or over-wash it, it may become oilier. You skin will try to
compensate for its loss of sebum (oil). If your skin is normal and you
are over-washing it can seem dry and flaky. With these tips you can
find your skin's true type category and treat it accordingly.
Skin-typing test: When you wake up in the morning, wash your face with
a mild facial cleanser and pat dry. Do not apply ANY products (not even
a toner!) and wait about an hour. Press a facial tissue or those
special little oil-tissues to your forehead, nose, chin and cheeks to
check for excess oil.
• If your skin isn't overly shiny from excess oil or too tight and dry from lack of, then you have Normal skin. Lucky you!
• If you have an oily T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) and are normal
on the cheeks, you have one of the most common skin types, Combination
skin.
• If your entire face is shiny with oil or an oily residue is left on
the tissue from all section of your face you have Oily/Acne-prone skin.
You may notice that you have a lot of breakouts and this is sometimes
attributed to excess hormones. This can be corrected with medications
received by a dermatologist or birth control from your OBGYN or
physician.
• If your skin feels tight and has flaky areas that are remedied by
moisturizer application - you have Dry skin. Dry skin appears to be
more wrinkled and older without moisturizer. It tends to age faster as
well. Your skin retains its youthful appearance with the help of its
natural moisturizer (sebum) and regular exfoliation.
• If you find that your face and/or body "breaks out", produces red
bumps or patches, irritable dry areas or stinging sensitive areas after
applying some products or just for no reason at all, you my friend,
have Sensitive skin. Sensitive skin can make your life difficult when
it comes to cosmetics, skincare or just everyday personal hygiene.
Wrinkles caused by aging:
These wrinkles are skin folds caused by biological changes that take
place inside the tissues; the tissue hardens, looses its elasticity and
becomes dry. Wrinkles caused by expression lines:
These types of wrinkles are caused by frequent contractions of the
muscles; these are folds or wrinkles that define the personality of
individuals. Feelings such as anger, pain, impatience or happiness are
expressed with muscular movements that leave marks on the skin when
repeated frequently and intensity.
There are other secondary factors that can cause characteristic folds,
furrows, and creases of the face. These include the constant pull of
gravity, frequent and constant positional pressure of the skin of the
face (e.g. during sleep) or repeated facial movements caused by the
contraction of the muscles of facial expression.
Why do wrinkles appear?
Your skin starts to age and wrinkle when your skin cells are dying off
faster than affect the mass of interlocking fibers. The support of the
epidermis becomes like an old mattress - it loses it firmness and folds
form where the epidermis then sink in - and that is the dreaded wrinkle.
When the thin net of elastic fibres of the dermis that lies beneath the
basal membrane of the epidermis breaks, a wrinkle is formed. As the
years go by we notice changes in the nature of the epidermis. The
functions of the cellular system are disturbed and cellular renewal
slows down. The skin only needs to be poorly moisturised for it to dry
out and become lined. In other words the appearance of wrinkles and
loss of firmness. Wrinkles and fine lines are the most easily visible
signs resulting from the obstacle course the skin has to face. Helped
along by sagging of the tissues, these wrinkles and lines result in the
formation of a type of canvas covered with cracks of various depths. As
time goes by, they deepen, reaching the dermis which is the skins
supporting mattress. When the dermis looses elasticity it becomes slack
and deeper wrinkles begin to form.
Facts:
As we age, communication diminishes within the skin, resulting in
decreased collagen production and an accumulation of degraded elastin
fibers. Peptides function as messengers in the skin, allowing the
epidermis and dermis to more effectively communicate.
This may sound like small potatoes, but research is showing their
effect to be quite significant. One peptide chain in particular,
Palmitoyl pentapeptide-3 (Matrixyl), has been shown to decrease skin
roughness by 13%, reduce wrinkle volume by 36%, and decrease wrinkle
depth by 27%after four months of twicedaily applications on the face
and neck.
Other peptides, including the synthetic peptide acetyl hexapeptide-3
(Argireline), are being used as a topical alternative to Botox. Rather
than paralyzing facial muscles, these peptides gently relax facial
muscles by interfering with nerve signals that tell the muscles to
contract. Even though the results are mild in comparison to Botox,
products containing these peptides can cause a noticeable difference on
there own, as well as prolonging the results of Botox.
AH3 is one of the only ingredients in cosmetics today, which work in
the same manner as Botox – only without the needles or the risk of
damaging the skin and facial muscles. AH3 reduces wrinkles by
inhibiting the release of Cholamine- a neurotransmitter that makes the
facial muscles contract. Similar to Botox, AH3 relaxes facial tension,
which leads to the reduction of facial wrinkles and lines but in a
non-paralytic way. Also unlike Botox, AH3 can be used all over your
face, neck and the rest of your body if you wish.
